Chemistry Engineering, Coimbra University (1993-1998)

International internship in the wineries:

Chateau Cantenac Brown - Margaux (1999 vintage);

Finca Flichman - Argentina (2000);

Leeuwin Estate - Australia (2002 vintage);

In 2001, I returned to Portugal and decided to create a project in the Beiras region, in which the objective centred itself in studying the locations. Gathering from the observation of the vineyards that I follow throughout their entire vegetative cycle and from the wines they produce, I try to create a basis of knowledge which allows me to assess in which way solar exposure, type of soil, surrounding forest, age of vineyard, clone, variety and vine leading can influence the wine.

Due to the constant spirit of experimentation, I try to develop new techniques and styles years after years. I decided to call my first wines: ensaios| FP(FP experiments).

In 2002, I started research on crio-extration, a concentration technique by freezing grapes or must; an innovative method on a national level.

Although I admit being fascinated by the new technology applied to the oenology, the connection with good old tradition is stronger. I exclusively work with Portuguese varieties, I ferment and mature the red wines in oak vats (see pictures on the left) and this vintage I'm experimenting the use of chestnut wood (tradition wood used in the region).
